Everyone possesses a different kind of mind that learns, understands, and performs differently; therefore, knowing our "multiple intelligences" is essential. The strength of these "intelligences" (like logical-mathematical thinking) helps to determine how we learn.  It's important to know both our learning styles and our intelligences since we don't all learn the same material in the same manner.  Top Flight Tutor ensures that students identify and understand how they learn best and utilizes that information to help our students succeed.

HOW DO I LEARN?

When we speak about "learning styles," we're referring to the preferred way in which a student absorbs, processes, understands, and retains information.  Everyone has a mixture of learning styles; there isn't one style or one mixture that is "right." We're all different and learn differently!  The three basic learning styles are visual, auditory, and kinesthetic.  One of the first things we do is determine the student's learning style so we can best assist her/him to achieve the desired goals in all subjects.

SO WHAT, EXACTLY, DO WE DO IN THE FIRST TUTORING SESSION?

After introducing ourselves, we'll spend a little time getting to know each other.  We'll ask, "What brings you here?" with the goal of learning the student's background, strengths and weaknesses, and listening to any questions the student (and parent/guardian) may have.  We'll discuss learning styles and multiple intelligences to obtain clues to how the student learns best and then map out a plan for meeting the student's academic needs.
